Bimatoprost

The largest, least ambiguous cosmetic result in this register — alongside two harms that do not reverse when you stop.

The marker is the strength the trials were actually run at. The bar is the span this register has recorded, approved and compounded together. Anything below the marker is a dose nobody has tested; anything above it is an assumption about a dose–response curve nobody has drawn.

01

Mechanism

EVIDENCE GRADE A

Extends the anagen growth phase of the eyelash follicle and increases the number of hairs in it. The same prostaglandin activity acts on melanocytes and on orbital adipose tissue, and cannot be dialled out.

HOUSE NOTES

  • Increased brown iris pigmentation may occur and the label says it is likely to be permanent.
  • Postmarketing reports include periorbital fat atrophy producing a deepened eyelid sulcus and eyelid ptosis — the wrong side effect entirely for the people who buy this.
  • Eyelash growth returns to pre-treatment level on stopping. The benefit is temporary and two of the harms are not.
  • The 5 ml bottle ships with 140 single-use applicators and the dose is one per eye per night, so the supply claim can be checked against the manufacturer's own component count. Nothing else here allows that.
